UK skating magazine iSKATE has ceased publication, not even publishing what was to be its final print edition for August/September.

The iSKATE website simply says:

“It is with regret that due to unforeseen circumstances it has been decided not to print the August/ September issue of iSKATE. iSKATE magazine would like to thank all of its subscribers over the years and it is a great sorrow that we will be no longer publishing anymore editions.”

The magazine has reported enthusiastically on the achievements of UK skaters both at home and abroad, including the Isle of Wight synchronized skating teams. It has charted the rise of IW junior team the Wight Jewels to British champions and reported on the team’s improved performance each year at the Junior World Challenge Cup. Team member Izzi Parkes even featured as a cover girl on one issue.

iSKATE is purported to be continuing in some form on the web. Whether this will happen, and what form it will take remains to be seen. The print form will be sorely missed.

The blog at therinkreport continues to maintain news about what’s happening to UK ice rinks – new developments, redevelopments, closures and such – items that used to appear in the Rinks Update section of iSKATE.

The Isle of Wight County Press for 9 March carries an article about the Wight Jewels’ imminent departure to Gothenburg, Sweden, for the 2012 Junior World Challenge Cup.

The Jewels head out on Wednesday 14 March for the competition, which takes place from 15 to 17 March. It’s the third time the Jewels will have taken part in what is the world championships at this level. It’s also the fourth time they have been eligible, but the first time they could have competed they stood aside for the Nottingham team on the grounds that the Jewels wanted more experience first. The Jewels will be aiming to improve on their 17th place achieved last year, which will be a tough challenge.

This year, the team, which is sponsored by ferry company Wightlink, has also benefited from sponsorship by Vikoma, The Tomato Stall, Carlisle Group, the IW branch of the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club and Shanklin Conservative Club.

NISA has run a news item  at http://www.iceskating.org.uk/node/4565 on the two GB teams selected to compete at their respective world championships, senior team Aura of Lee Valley and junior team Wight Jewels of the Isle of Wight.

Although it is flattering to have the national body declare your team is going for gold, the reality of the international judging system (IJS) and the calibre of the opposing teams is that Wight Jewels are aiming to do the best they can and improve their world standing at the Junior World Challenge Cup in Neuchatel, Switzerland, in March.
