IW synchronized skating teams Wight Jewels and Wight Crystals both came away with gold at the Sk8 Scotland Synchronized Skating Championships and Trophy D’Ecosse Club International 2011 at Dumfries Ice Bowl on 15 to 17 April.
Wight Jewels eclipsed Iceland’s Frostroses in the junior event, scoring a total of 78.54 compared with Frostroses’ 38.21.
Wight Crystals scored 28.80 in the juvenile event, to finish first ahead of Nottingham’s Silhouettes on 19.04 and Inverness’ Northern Lights on 11.23. The Crystals also won the award for most entertaining programme.
Preliminary level team Wight Gems finished sixth in their event with 23.24 points, although the points margin between third and seventh places was quite tight. The Gems received some consolation by winning a certificate for best circle.
Because the competition is also the Scottish championships, trophies were also awarded to the top Scottish team in each category, leading to some amusing incidents when the team lower down the results order came away with the biggest trophy.
The IW synchronized skating teams are sponsored by ferry company Wightlink.
