The Professionals on Ice Matt Evers adn Frankie, Vicky Ogden and Sam Attwater, with IW skaters

Matt Evers, Frankie Poultney, Vicky Ogden and Sam Attwater from The Professionals on Ice with IW skaters

Ryde head coach Terri Smith writes: Isle of Wight skaters are extremely excited that The Professionals on Ice show is coming to their ice rink. The cast includes skaters from the ITV’s Dancing on Ice, and the show is touring the country – but it starts here on the Isle of Wight on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 October.

Not only are we excited to see professional skaters and celebrities on the island, many of our very own talented skaters will be performing over this weekend with the stars.  Forty local school children and members of the IW ice skating club will get this great opportunity. Skaters include both boys and girls that are currently training at a high level or compete nationally representing our island.

Two of our synchronized skating teams will also be performing.  Wight Sparkles, our youngest team with skaters aged from eight to 13 years, will be performing on the Friday with their new routine.  For more than half the team it will be their very first performance – I’m sure  this will be a once in a lifetime experience for these young skaters,  considering the size of the audience and the profile of the show.

Our junior synchro team ,Wight Jewels, have been invited to perform on the Saturday afternoon and have had a special invitation to be part of The Professionals on Ice show in Basingstoke on Sunday 26 October. The team’s dedication and hard work on the ice have in the past earned them NISA performance squad status.

Other top IW solo skaters in the show include Nikita Heathfield, William Riley, Oliver Brunton, James Wright, Miles Grist, Toni Delap and Amy World. Amy, who lives in Gosport and trains with the Wight Jewels synchro team, will also be appearing in Planet Ice’s Christmas show as Mary Poppins here at Ryde on 13 and 14 December.

Please come and support our local skaters and enjoy being entertained by the professional skaters. Tickets can be purchased from Planet Ice on 01983 615155.

Saturday afternoon’s performance of The Jungle Book on Ice at Planet Ice Ryde was a sell-out, and with virtually all the tickets also gone for Sunday afternoon’s performance, the only remaining opportunity to see this fabulous show if you don’t have tickets is on Sunday 9 December at 6pm.

This year the show particularly seems to benefit from IW skaters’ background in synchronized skating, with the ensemble skating looking particularly polished, with quickly executed intersections and good flow between formations. There are more fantastic carnival animal costumes from Emma Baxter, who worked so hard last year to bring The Lion King to life.

Young Miles Grist, aged 12, takes on the demanding role of Mowgli, menaced and pursued by a suitably sinister Gemma Marsh as Shere Khan (don’t forget to boo…). But Shere Khan must reckon with Mowgli’s friends, including Sabrina Danzig as Baghera, Beckie Vockins as Baloo, and the vultures Buzzie, Flaps, Ziggy and Dizzy, played by Izzy Coeshott, Keelin Scholes, Beth Howarth, and Nicola Baxter.

There’s a chance to see how some of the IW’s best solo skaters in action too, with special exhibitions from junior level skater Maggie Read and novice level skater Nikita Heathfield.

Talented skaters from the Isle of Wight Ice Dance & Figure Skating Club are performing The Jungle Book on Ice at Planet Ice Ryde this coming weekend. As well as the public shows on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 December, skaters are fitting in three schools-only performances on Friday 7 December.

Show times are at 3pm and 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are £6.50 for adults, £4.50 for children and £19.00 for families.

The club itself does not make money from the performances except through the raffle at each show, so please support its fund-raising activities there. Many a skater whose first taste of public performance was at the club show has gone on to compete individually or as part of a team at national and international level.

Danielle Harrison, guest skater at the gala

Wednesday’s fundraising gala to help send the Wight Jewels to train in Sweden with top synchro coach Andrea Dohany gave the Jewels one last opportunity – again! – to skate their popular old short programme to Jai Ho by the Pussycat Dolls. The performance is viewable at the bottom of this item.

Attendees also saw the Jewels put their new short through its paces for the first time in public and performances of the coming season’s routines for novice team Wight Crystals and elementary team Wight Sparkles. Newly formed adults synchro team Wight Fossils were also in action, showing that synchronized skating isn’t just for the young, but for anyone who is young at heart.

The gala was also another chance to see the IW’s young skaters in action after their recent club competition, including some of the IW’s top level skaters at present, including Archie Bicknell, Nikita Heathfield and Maggie Read.

Guest skater for the evening was Danielle Harrison, who not only has her own website but was an Olympic torchbearer in Andover this year. Danielle is a fantastically gifted young skater, who divides her skating time between Basingstoke and Dundee; she is coached in Scotland by top British coaches Debi and Simon Briggs, who recently put IW skaters through their paces at the IW club’s training camp. Danielle, bronze medallist at advanced novice level at the 2011 British championships and a member of NISA’s international development team for 2012-2013, also recently delighted the audience at the Pursuit of Passion charity gala in Basingstoke.
