Tommy-Jo Nyman, son of former Ryde head coach Katie Nyman, won the intermediate men’s title at the US Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, this week.
TJ took his first steps on the ice at Ryde rink on the Isle of Wight, but left with his family at the age of three for the US. He now skates at Space Coast Iceplex, Rockledge, Florida, where Katie now coaches. He won the juvenile title last year at the US championships.
This year’s event was a real nail-biter. TJ’s score of 37.35 gave him a slender lead after the short programme with under three points separating him from the next four competitors, and just 1.09 points between him and second placed Dinh Tran. Skating ninth in the free programme, TJ had an anxious wait as the skaters in second, third and fourth places in the short were to skate after him. Ultimately his free programme score of 67.35 and total of 104.70 were enough to keep him in first place, with Dinh Tran staying in second with 100.41.
