Cross-Solent Artistic Competition 2013 results

Gosport emerged as winners of the friendly Cross-Solent Artistic Competition between Gosport and Isle of Wight figure skating clubs on Saturday 27 April, taking the event by 68 points to 55.

The event, held at Gosport Ice Rink, showcased the artistic talents of the south coast’s ice skaters and provided an entertaining and enjoyable competition for supporters and spectators.

As usual, the event was close. The Isle of Wight started well, winning class one by 13 points to 8, with the IW taking first place. But Gosport eroded that lead in class two, with a 15 points to 6 victory, and then proceeded to widen the gap. IW skaters also achieved first place in classes three, five and six, but Gosport made up vital points in the middle placings to compensate.

The artistic competition was followed by the Sue Buckingham Memorial Trophy, which saw the clubs’ synchronized skating teams in action: Gosport AllStars and Shooting Stars, and the Wight Crystals, Sparkles and Fossils. With all five teams skating at different competitive levels and with different required elements for their IJS-slanted programmes, a competition judged under the old RJS is always just for fun. The AllStars won followed by the Shooting Stars, and then in order, Wight Crystals, Sparkles and Fossils.

Adult team Wight Fossils made their competitive debut at the event, making a brave attempt to take on the highly experienced younger teams. The combined aged of Wight Fossils’ skaters is over 400 years.

The Sue Buckingham Memorial Trophy is contested in memory of ice skating judge Sue Buckingham. Sue was a regular member of the select group of judges who very kindly make the effort to come across to the Island to officiate at club competitions.
