Continued success at domestic IJS events – the British, Welsh and Scottish championships – and the resultant ability to compete at international level means that the synchro teams, predominantly fronted by the Wight Jewels, are beginning to attract sponsorship above and beyond the highly valued contribution from the IW’s own companies and organisations. Details of these will be publicized shortly.
Ferry company Wightlink sponsors all three IW synchronized skating teams, which reduces the cost of getting off the Island for competitions and training. IW companies that sponsor the teams also include Vikoma and The Tomato Stall.
Junior team the Wight Jewels received support from Ventnor Rotary Club and the Island Pilates Centre, among others, to help attend the Junior World Challenge Cup in Gothenburg in 2010. In 2011 the teams received valuable assistance from the IW branch of the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club and Shanklin Conservative Club.
Offers of sponsorship have to be approved by the National Ice Skating Association (NISA) to ensure our skaters keep their amateur status. Potential sponsors for the synchro teams should initially contact head coach Terri Smith via Planet Ice Ryde (01983 615155).
