The club needs a minimum of five committee members, including three officers, to be quorate at meetings and therefore able to make decisions: a full committee comprises 10 members, including four officers (chairman, vice-chairman, secretary and treasurer). Applications need to be submitted no later than one week before the AGM, and candidates need to be nominated and seconded by club members. Any club member can nominate or second someone for the committee, but only members aged 14 or over can vote at the AGM: only someone aged 16 or over can stand for the committee. The club noticeboard at the rink should have details of how to apply.

If the committee still has vacancies after (note, after) all the nominees are considered and appointed, then further candidates can be considered from those attending the AGM.

Skating on Thursday 26 April, Toni Delap was 1st and Lauren Wood was 9th in the Beginner Ladies aged 8 & 9 (Brooks Novice Trophy). Olivia Lacey achieved a podium place, coming 3rd in the Beginner Ladies aged 10 & 11 (Skating for All Trophy). Hannah Barfoot was 13th in the Level 1 Ladies 12 & over (Pat Watson Shield).

More podium places came with Miles Grist taking 1st in the Level 2 Men (Bracknell Shield for Boys).

On Friday 27 April, Keelin Scholes was 7th in the Level 3 Ladies 13 & over (Moonlight Trophy).

Amy World, who skates for Gosport but is a member of the IW synchro teams, was on the podium twice. She was first in the Level 3 Ladies 12 & under (Sunshine Cup) and took second in the Solo Exhibition Level 3 (Mad Hatters Cup).

Most of the lower level competitions at Bracknell are heavily contested, and top-three places are particularly well merited.

Earlier in the week in the adult competitions, Carol and Steve Taverner were first in the Bracknell Adult Pairs Trophy. Carol also achieved second place in the Silver Classics event (Syers Trophy).

The two videos above are the last performances by the Wight Jewels of their short programme to Jai Ho by the Pussycat Dolls and their free programme to a Michael Jackson medley. The team will have new programmes for the 2012-2013 season. Both performances were at the Junior World Challenge Cup 2012, 15 to 17 March, in Gothenburg, Sweden, where the Jewels finished 15th, the best result achieved by a British team at the event for more than 10 years.

IW skater Maggie Read was among the 21 entrants competing in the junior ladies event on Thursday (short) and Friday (free), scoring a total of 52.32. She moved up from 20th place after the short to 18th overall.

Note that the event is different from the Southern IJS, which took place at Lee Valley Ice Centre in March.

If you would like to be part of the success, you can find out what synchro is like at two taster sessions at Planet Ice Ryde. The sessions are on Tuesday 17 and Tuesday 24 April from 4.15pm to 6.15pm: skaters will just need to pay for a patch ice session on the day. All levels and ages are welcome, and skaters don’t have to live on the Isle of Wight. Head coach Terri Smith will be running the sessions.

The sessions will shape the island’s synchro teams for the forthcoming season. When Terri knows which skaters are interested for next season she will decide at which levels the teams will compete.

The teams in the 2011-2012 season were:

Wight Jewels – junior. The Jewels won the British Championships for a fourth consecutive time this season and represented Great Britain at the Junior World Challenge Cup, where they placed 15th – the best result for a British team in more than 10 years. For 2012-2013, skaters at junior level must be no younger than 12 and no older than 18 on 1 July 2012 and hold at least level 4 field moves.

Wight Crystals – novice. The Crystals were 3rd at British Championships, 1st at Deeside (Welsh Championships) and 2nd at the Trophy D’Ecosse. They represented Great Britain at the Spring Cup in Milan. For 2012-2013, skaters at novice level must be no younger than 10 but no older than 14 on 1 July 2012 and hold at least level 1 field moves.

Wight Sparkles – elementary. The Sparkles were 3rd in their first ever competition at Trophy D’Ecosse. For 2012-2013, skaters at elementary level must be no older than 15 on 1 July 2012, and no more than two skaters can hold level 2 elements, free or dance tests.

Live web streaming of both days is to be provided in Europe by Swedish broadcaster SVT and Finnish broadcaster YLE. SVT can also be viewed on the iPhone/iPad app SVT Play.

The event’s official Facebook page reports live coverage is as follows on SVT: short programmes on Friday between 19.30 and 21.15 CET; free programmes on Saturday between 18.250 and 20.10 CET. This limits live coverage to the top 11 of 21 teams on Friday, and the top eight teams on Saturday.

The official website says live coverage on SVT should be available outside Sweden throughout Europe. However, this was not the case on the Friday or Saturday, with the broadcast suffering from restricted geographic access via the web version of SVT. The broadcast, however, was still viewable in the UK on the iPhone/iPad app SVT Play.

If you’re lucky the selected clip of the free programme will work for Sweden1: Team Surprise, the overall winner of the event. Other clips have restricted access.

Bronze medallists: Wight Sparkles

IW synchronized skating team Wight Sparkles made an impressive competitive debut by taking the bronze medal at elementary level in the Trophy D’Ecosse today. In the 11-strong group the Wight Sparkles scored  24.37, putting them only just behind second-placed Nottingham’s Icetastic on 24.45 and not far off the winners, Altrincham’s Twizzles on 26.73.

Wight Sparkles are: Saphire Recalde-Arnold, Osiris Butcher, Serenna Copping, Toni Delap, Holly Donohue (on holiday), Ella Newnham, Michael Pedley, Hayley Purrington, Savannah Randall, Will Riley, Jemma Southwell, Ayesha Taylor, and Lauren Wood.

Besides the novice event, two other ISU categories were decided today. At senior level Fire on Ice of Australia led Team Spirit of Bristol 39.41 to 23.22 after the short, and remained first after the free with a total of 112.94 against Spirit’s total of 63.54. How the Australians’ score measures up to the scrutiny of a world-class judging panel will be determined next week at the World Synchronized Skating Championships in Gothenburg (Fire on Ice managed 105.65 at the Australian championships).

In the juniors, the short programme saw Team Joy of Sweden in front with 32.60, Starlight Juniors of Switzerland in second with 30.59 and Nottingham’s Icicles third with 22.82. First and second place switched after the free programme, with Starlight Juniors ending up first with a total of 91.89, Team Joy second on a total of 85.99 and the Icicles third on 66.45.

Scores are now officially confirmed.

IW team Wight Sparkles will skate eighth in the 11-strong elementary event, taking to the ice as first team in the third warm-up group. Wight Crystals will skate first of two teams in the advanced novice event. Both teams travel up to Dumfries from the island tomorrow.

In the junior event, UK number two team Nottingham Icicles are second to skate in a group that contains Sweden’s number four Team Joy and Swiss team Starlight Juniors of Berne. Team Joy plans to document its attendance at the event on its website (view in Google Chrome for automatic translation from Swedish to English). Starlight Juniors have been Swiss junior champions four times, though that honour is currently held by Cool Dreams Juniors. It’ll be an interesting contest, and iowskaters wishes the Icicles all the best.

Traditional national rivalries surface in the seniors, where it’s a straight contest between Fire on Ice of Australia and the UK’s Team Spirit of Bristol.
