The Isle of Wight Ice Dance & Figure Skating Club’s AGM is at 7pm on Friday 11 May at the bowls club on Ryde Esplanade. This is a change of venue: it was due to be held at the rink.
The club needs a minimum of five committee members, including three officers, to be quorate at meetings and therefore able to make decisions: a full committee comprises 10 members, including four officers (chairman, vice-chairman, secretary and treasurer). Applications need to be submitted no later than one week before the AGM, and candidates need to be nominated and seconded by club members. Any club member can nominate or second someone for the committee, but only members aged 14 or over can vote at the AGM: only someone aged 16 or over can stand for the committee. The club noticeboard at the rink should have details of how to apply.
If the committee still has vacancies after (note, after) all the nominees are considered and appointed, then further candidates can be considered from those attending the AGM.

This year’s club artistic competition on Halloween was a great success, with club members making a fantastic effort to show their very best in entertainment skating.
Five extremely brave skaters undertook the challenge of a Musical Interpretation class. On the night, they were all allowed to listen to a chosen piece of music, then had to go out their on their own and choreograph and perform to it. The judges very aptly chose the music from Ghostbusters and all five competitors, representing various ranges of skating ability, did an amazing job! Well done Lottie, Sophie, Hannah, Keelin and Archie – you’re braver than most!
The evening culminated with a Halloween disco and games session on the ice, led by coaches Matt Russell and Tom Eklund. Even Annaliese was out there, skating under the careful guidance of her mum, head coach Terri Smith.
The medal placings for all classes were:
Spin Spiral Jump
1st Charlotte Pedley
2nd Pipi Lotta Kulla
Under Level 1 (Beginners)

2nd Ella Newnham

The club’s artistic competition is on Sunday 31 October 2010 from 4:30 to 8:30 pm. It is open to any club member and application forms are now available from the rink’s coaches.
In addition to the artistic solo and group events there will be spin, spiral and jump categories to provide a competitive opportunity for some of our newer skaters.
After all the hard work is done, the club will be hosting a Halloween party for members, including ice-time games and food and fun upstairs in the bar.
There is an an ice skating gala on Wednesday 27 October from 6.00 to 7.00 pm at Planet Ice Ryde to help raise funds to send our synchronized skating teams to the British championships in Sheffield.
All three IW synchro teams will be skating as well as individual skaters from the club. Admission is £2.50 at the door .
So call all your friends and family, put notices in your school newsletters and on your Facebook page to let people know it’s happening. We need to get as large an audience as possible to attend – the more people there, the more money we raise!
With the British championships just a short way off, fund-raising is under way for the IW synchro teams.
Head coach Terri Smith has organized a sponsored jog for the synchro teams on Sunday 10 October at 11:30 am. Skaters will be jogging from Planet Ice Ryde to Seaview and back, a distance of about five miles. They will be around with sponsorship forms, so be generous, and come out to cheer them on!
Funds raised from this event will be used towards the participants’ competition travel costs over the next couple of months.
